Have you paid too much Tax?

You may be eligible to claim tax relief on a number of items.   If you don’t complete tax returns each year, don’t assume that you will have already had tax relief on everything you are entitled to.  If you have not claimed it, you probably have not had it!

Typical items for which we regularly submit tax reclaims:

• Business mileage – if your employer reimburses you at less than 45p per mile for business mileage, or simply provides you with a fuel card, you may be able to claim tax relief on mileage costs.

• Professional subscriptions – if you personally pay subscriptions to societies and institutions included on HM Revenue & Custom’s “list 3”, you may be eligible for tax relief on this amount.

• Uniform allowance – if you wear uniform or protective clothing for work and you have to wash it yourself with no allowance already paid to you by your employer for this, you may be entitled to tax relief on an amount already set by HM Revenue and Customs.

• Higher rate tax relief on pension contributions that you pay personally (only applies if your income exceeds £41,865 2014-15) – you probably only get basic rate tax relief on personal pension contributions.  If you are a higher rate tax payer, you need to claim the extra tax relief from HM Revenue and Customs.
